Letter sent To the Editor of CM LIFE on April 09, 1999 ,
Before discussing any other issue on the Kosovo problem we must ask ourselves what right or authority NATO has in these strikes. The answer is NONE. NATO was formed for a different purpose. The United Nations secretary general was very clear in his statement that you need the AUTHORITY of the U.N. to be involved in such an action.
The U.S. has deliberately bypassed this AUTHORITY and they took the INTERNATIONAL LAW into their own hands. What is other countries decide to act if the same manner claiming humanitarian issues. Who is to control them? Why do we have the U.N., since NATO is here to "protect" all the suppressed populations of the world? The role of the U.N. as the international judge has been deliberately diminished by the U.S. and NATO in order for them to take the role of the International Police Officer who doesn't even have a warrant for anybody's arrest.
Why didn't NATO attack Israel for murdering Palestinians every day?
Why didn't NATO attack Turkey that is violating basic human rights of millions of Kurds?
Why didn't NATO attack Turkey for invading Cyprus and causing 200,000 refugees?
The answer is simple. NATO is not there because it fell suddenly in love with the Ethnic Albanians but because its interests are served. Besides, most of the humanity knows that Iraq was only bombed because of the oil issue. The U.S. always selects which countries to blame for violations of human rights enforcing the formula of double-face politics. Is the U.S. so innocent that it can judge everybody else? They are talking about the genocide of the Albanians. But the U.S. government has until today refused to ratify the United Nations Convention on Genocide because it risks the danger to be found guilty of genocide against the Native Americans.
The NATO strikes are outrageous. As outrageous as the fact that many Americans believe that Kosovo is in the Middle East or Asia. Also, the U.S. media in its big majority is so biased. The American people deserve to know the truth that behind all those advertisements of B52s there are great dangers. What happens if NATO decides to send ground troops? How many innocent Americans have to die before the president of this country will say "Stop, enough?"
Even NATO countries don't agree with each other. In fact, only the U.S. and the United Kingdom insist with the bombing, because they want Milocevic's head. But as we all know this will never happen, as it didn't happen with Saddam Hussein. The ones that really suffer are the civilians, both Serbs and Albanians. The people of Iraq are suffering today and children die every day from starvation.
NATO has no business there. These issues are for the United Nations to solve because it is the only body that has the AUTHORITY to do so. Enforce the Power of Law and not the Law of Power!
If the U.S. really wants to help, it can really help all these millions of people starving on this earth. The U.S. is producing wheat that is enough to fill three planets, but most of it is wasted in order to keep prices up!
I used to think that humanity has made big progress. I was so mistaken! We still continue to kill each other like animals. We are even worse because animals kill to survive, human beings have killed so many times for more reasons than survival!
