Letter send To the Editor of CM LIFE on April 19, 2000 ,
After being four years in the United States, I came to realize that the big majority of U.S. students know very little about world geography, international issues and cultural differences. Some of the reasons that U.S. students show low interest for the rest of the world are the following:
The U.S. is a huge country. Traveling from Michigan to Florida is like traveling from Greece to Germany. ¥Geography is not highly emphasized by the educational institutions.
World news is of third and fourth priority for the majority of the media.
International news is mostly ignored, especially by the youth.
Finally, the ethnocentrism, the feeling of superiority leads the students to ignore the other "inferior" countries. There is a perception among the majority of the U.S. students that "we are the best so we don't care about the rest."
Ignorance is an intellectual disease that can be healed only by having the right education, at the right time with the right way. Therefore the educational institutions have a tremendous responsibility to correct this situation. Our university administration does not fund international education to the extent that it should. In addition, CM LIFE, a major educational tool of this campus, is doing the minimum towards global awareness. CM LIFE must have a whole or at least a half page section dedicated to internationalism and diversity. This section may talk about global issues such as the environment, cultural differences and international news. It may have interviews from CMU international students, from U.S. students that have studied abroad or even from professors that have taught abroad.CM LIFE has a great opportunity to really make a difference. It's time for both CMU's administration and CM LIFE to change.
